A Housing Heroine and Champion for Women ๐ฉโ๐ผ
In the 1800's, Octavia Hill revolutionised social housing in the UK while shattering barriers for women in the process; she saw a dire need for dignified and affordable housing, and she embarked on a mission to transform lives, not just buildings ๐ช
Octavia started by buying several houses in Marylebone, gradually increasing her stock to 15 housing schemes and 3,000 tenants in 1874 and insisting that her rent collectors were women ๐
In 1916, the women who had trained under her founded the Association of Women Housing Workers, which has since then become today's Chartered Insitute of Housing ๐ช
As a woman, she paved the way for future generations to make their mark on the world; she challenged the status quo and her work ensured that everyone, regardless of gender or background, had access to decent housing โจ
โWe all need space; unless we have it we cannot reach that sense of quiet in which whispers of better things come to us.โ
